Audrey Wood was exposed to art at a young age.  Her father repainting circus murals for income is Audrey's earliest memory.  When her mother described Audrey's learning ability, she would say describe her to be a fast learner.  At the age of 2, Audrey and her parents moved to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where her parents studied art.  Since her trip to Mexico, Spanish became Audrey's second language.  Audrey was reading at the age of 3.  Her parents had two more daughters whom studied the arts, dance, art, music, and drama, along side her.

In fourth grade, Audrey made the decidion to become a children's author.  Audrey was the only female artist in the four generations that acquired art as a profession.  Once her son was born, Audrey began to seriously write children's picture books (AudreyWood.com, n.d.).

Don's childhood was different compared to Audrey's childhood.  As a child, Don lived and worked on a family farm in the Great Central Valley in CA.  His parents did not study art like Audrey's parents; however, his mother was a well-known elementary in the town and his father owned the family farm.  Work on the farm was hard as Don had to tend to 40 acres of potatoes by himself.

Don decided to become an artist when he was in sixth grade.  Since work on the farm was very busy during the summer, Don would spend time drawing during the winter season. Don met Audrey while studying at Berkley.  Six months later the couple was married.  After Bruce was born, Audrey became serious about writing children's picture books so, Don decided to take his hand at illustrating one of her books.  Moonflute was his first illustrated children's book and Don has not stopped illustrating since that moment(AudreyWood.com,n.d.).
